ESCOLTA

I take your hand, ladies first
Wearing a casual suit,
I’m scared; if you don’t take my hand
I’ll stop this movie and drive away

While dancing in that dress,
I see your innocent smile
Let’s skip this over-the-top party, privately

There are no gaps
Wading through our schedules,
Today, the world
Only waits for you

I’ll bring you the greatest love,
Always, I want to be your ideal man
As I convey these genuine thoughts
I’ll be with you on the way to your curfew

You saying that I’ve reached your expectations
Is my one and only pride, so
I will never be bored of you
That’s why I’ll always stay pure

How about a reservation at a restaurant,
Or is it just like a normal day off?
Pretending to be an utmost gentleman,
Please notice – I like you

Even when we don’t meet
Think of me,
I’ll give you a bouquet as a present
I wonder what flowers you like?
In the middle of our conversation, quietly,
I’ll listen

The spice of love mingles,
Pouring into this lighter champagne glass
A single mouthful alone dyed your cheeks
I will protect this silly you

Some day I’d like to take you around the world
Surely, even to the southern islands
You told a friend, “I’ve been having fun recently”??
– I want to hide

Before our date, I cannot calm down
Using the back mirror to fix my hair do
You don’t know this me, huh?
In front of you, I’m perfect…
…I wish.

I’ll bring you the greatest love,
Always, I want to be your ideal man
As I convey these genuine thoughts
I’ll be with you on the way to your curfew

You saying that I’ve reached your expectations
Is my one and only pride, so
I will never be bored of you
That’s why I’ll always stay pure

Kiss you a thousand kisses
Kiss me one little kiss
Forever and always, I’ll escort you

  • Translator’s notes: Original post was on 05/29/16! This was the original kanji source.
  • “escolta” comes from “escoltrar”, which means “escort” in Spanish!!! Hence the last line…
  • POV singer is so much in love, I cannot even. In light of this “let’s skip this over-the-top party, privately” made me sideeye this SO MUCH…but contextually, it can be just that he’s suggesting they ditch the boring formal party and go somewhere where they can have their date more comfortably, and that my head is so far into the gutter that I probably need help.
  • The last line of verse 4 was actually something a bit closer to “I’ll take you down Curfew Street” (…mongen-dori???) I have no idea if this is some uniquely Japanese turn of phrase, so I thought to translate it as how it felt like to me (“I’ll be with you until your curfew”)
  • When POV singer says they’re “pretending” to be an “utmost gentleman”, it’s more that he’s not actually good at this dating stuff and is working off the stereotypical romance fluff in media, contextually speaking. (I say this because the way I phrased it made it seem as if he’s not actually a great guy, period, and is just pretending to be one for…ulterior motives?? But yeah. Not this time.)
  • “I will protect this silly you” – the singer’s date got drunk on one gulp of champagne. Apparently they get ‘silly’ when they’re drunk. Basically, he’s gonna make sure they get home safely.
  • Verse 9’s last two lines – there is a quote of the sentence “Recently, I’ve been having fun”, which I assumed the singer’s date told their friend…and I can only assume this drove sweet, shy POV singer into so much giddy embarrassment that he wanted to hide. I dunno.
