ヤングスワロゥ

ENG title: Young Swallow

If it’s about breathing, then understand
Always glancing at your face from the side,
If you get mad, it’ll be happiness
Wield it to rouse it; shortly, I want to meet it

Without relaxation, let’s understand
The domesticated me, recognize [him] as a messy man
Splitting the costs is impossible
Financial responsibilities are for adults

I’m a kid so I don’t get it, but still, wow, that’s cute
It’s not done for sinful reasons, the resigned flight of the young swallow.
I like this too much.

Catching glimpses over and over
Makes my heart beat fast, after the feeling
I want it.

Swaying to and fro,
Makes me excited, like déjà vu
I’ve been drawn in.

This generation
Has people not in the know, so,
Don’t finish
What you’re saying, and as you are,
Let’s say hi.

Without preparation, let’s make love
Society suffers; the two of us,
More than anyone else, we’ve noticed.
Let’s run away, and hold each other close–

In case my wish won’t come true, my heart, wow, but,
You shouldn’t lose even the foundation, young swallow.
You understand, right?

Sorrowfully shining,
Baser emotions peacefully
Sparkle.

Burning up bit by bit,
Every resignation, a tragic feeling
I’ve found it.

Rare,
Impossible words have been spelled out,
At this late hour,
You don’t need to say anything
Let’s fall in love

Don’t fly away, okay; inside this heart……
That’s enough.
……you don’t need to say anything more.

Catching glimpses over and over
Makes my heart beat fast, after the feeling
I want it.

Swaying to and fro,
Makes me excited, like déjà vu
I’ve been drawn in.

Sorrowfully shining,
Baser emotions peacefully
Sparkle.

Burning up bit by bit,
Every resignation, a tragic feeling
I’ve found it.

Rare, impossible words have been spelled out
At this late hour, you don’t need to say anything, let’s fall in love.

  • ok, first of all, these out of the way: rejet’s infamous kanji/pronunciation switcheroos:
  • I’m a kid so I don’t get it, but still, wow, that’s cute”: kanji for “painter” 絵描き pronounced as “child” こども
  • This generation”: Spelled with “the differences of years” 歳の差, pronounced as “generation” せだい
  • OK I KNOW I SWITCHED OUT SOMETHING VERY IMPORTANT HERE. when i first expressed interest in TL’ing this (i make it sound so formal omg basically what happened was that i listened to this and went all, oh CRAP) one of my friends affirmed knowing this by going “oh, assymen?” which is, yes, AN ACTUAL LYRIC IN THIS GODFORSAKEN SONG, YES. but, as you may have seen, it’s not where it’s *supposed* to be here (second line from the top)
  • this is not me being a prude (srsly have you SEEN me recently???), rather; until further clarification, as far as i’m concerned, the placement of “assymen” in this sentence doesn’t rlly make sense to me. the flow of that sentence goes (roughly) – “always [at] your complexion looking AssyMen” which is??? i’m given two options here – take the word at face value (AssyMen who’s always looking at your face) or, what i ultimately decided on using for now, take it as a pun. it could just be the way he pronounces it, but the way souma ended up singing assymen made it sound like アシメ, which is short-form for ‘asymmetrical’, and i’ve seen it used elsewhere (really casually, and really rarely) as smthn along the lines of ‘from the side’. hence, this.
  • but, seriously, guys. AssyMen.
  • i give up, i surrender, make sure to triple-burn the resultant ashes of my composure and pray a novena for them on your way out
  • as for ume’s MessyMen – this makes a bit more sense but? only very very barely???? i basically just winged it tbh ww
  • this is why you don’t translate rejet songs, patricia
  • “this generation has people not in the know” – this could have legit been read as this generation has people who are naked. running off the theme of the verse, though, it’s more likely it’s referring to people who don’t know about the, err, stuff the singer and his beau are up to, kinda like how adam and eve were naked and all before the tree of knowledge? so, yeah. basically: not everyone knows about the nasty, so stay put and don’t talk about it
  • don’t finish what you’re saying, and as you are, let’s say hi” –  ミナマデヰワナイ, spelled in katakana (with the commonly unused one for “wi” in place for “i”!), “don’t finish what you’re saying”.  ママニ, something along the lines of “as you are” or “as usual”?  チッスシタ –  チッス is a slangy term for saying “hi”, kinda like ‘hey’ or smthn
  • can i just – there was rather obscure katakana in this one, which i really liked??? there’s  ヱ (we) which was used in place of “e”,  ヰ (wi) in place of “i”, and idk why they ended up using katakana almost exclusively in some parts where one normally uses hiragana (maybe to match with the onomatopoeias? or to make it look ‘cool’ and ‘sharp’ like how ppl normally think katakana is??) but i found it fun to work my way back with them!
  • You shouldn’t lose even the foundation, young swallow.” – OKAY SO THE WAY I PHRASED THIS WAS REALLY WEIRD, I KNOW, I’M SORRY, I’M WORKING ON IT;;;;; in any case it’s smthn along the lines of ‘even if it’s the very groundwork [you built your career upon], you shouldn’t lose it’ wait why does that sound a bit better
  • maybe “young swallow” is their male oiran codename who knows who knows
  • idk if you noticed but i tried to make the 2nd chorus a bit symmetrical with the 1st chorus! at…the expense of making it look a bit more awkward than it’s supposed to tho…2nd chorus first part is kinda “i’m burning up and gradually realizing that all the feels of resignation i had (callback to “the resigned flight of the young swallow”) made me feel rlly angsty, so i’vE FOUND THAT–” and it all leads to the second part where they go “it’s rare and should be impossible but crap let’s not talk about this anymore BASICALLY WE’VE FALLEN IN LOVE, THAT’S IT, OKAY, SMOOCHES AND BEYOND NOW”
  • do you understand what i’m saying lol i’m sorry i don’t understand what i’m saying either
  • the spoken parts at the bridge seem to be a conversation? their lover is telling them to not fly away, cuz “in their heart-” THAT seems to be a cut-off opener of a confession, and they KNOW it, hence the lines they end up saying next
  • since i already pledged allegiance to tensho academy and all its students long ago we all know that umehara yuichiro is near and dear to my heart and i will always support him but just how much do i love saito souma for me to actually go into this, guns blazing, for both of them
  • –actually, no, don’t answer that
