アゲハ蝶、夢舞い恋しぐれ

ENG title (?): A swallowtail butterly, dancing [in a] dream, as love falls from overhead

Dreaming on the sixteenth moon, I encountered you
Since I’d had resolve to go down this path,
I went back to reality,
Even though for a moment I’d sung of love

Passionately yearning thoughts
Were also hidden – that I’ve become a butterfly with a birds’ song,
Conveying through the blush of my cheeks
That the passion had been restrained

Aah, up to the hair on my head
I want to live beautifully
This chrysalis is flinging off its cocoon

Dreaming on the sixteenth moon, I encountered you
Since I’d had resolve to go down this path,
I went back to reality,
Intoxicated by that moment of love

Softly, softly,
I will go to your side
Softly, softly,
The swallowtail butterfly shall dance

Little by little rain falls down
We’re under a roof, shoulder-to-shoulder
Having faith in the power of words, I mumble,
It’d be good if time can stay like this.

Ahh, I’m getting soaked down to the tips of my toes
In order to be beguiling,
I should hide my scent

In the sixteenth moon’s sky, the clouds [formed] waterworks
Nevertheless, if that path is all it’s supposed to be,
I went back to reality,
Even though for a moment I had asked for love

Aah, as love drizzles,
I want to live more beautifully than anyone
[As] I get aboard that crimson prayer

Dreaming on the sixteenth moon, I encountered you
Since I’d had resolve to go down this path,
I went back to reality,
Intoxicated by that moment of love

Softly, softly,
I will go to your side
Softly, softly,
The swallowtail butterfly shall dance

  • Original TL dated 10/24/16
  • japanese tends to eschew pronouns at will. this is glaringly obvious some times and not so much of a pain in others…this song was, unfortunately for me, the former.
  • Dreaming on the sixteenth moon” – this could have been “…on the sixteenth night,” but the way this entire thing was phrased as kinda demanded more…class? finesse? uh, pretentiousness? (lol) a guess tho – is he sixteen years old during the time of this movie?
  • UPDATE 11/22: The sixteenth-day moon is apparently also known as the “hesitating” moon!
  • Conveying through the blush of one’s cheeks/That the passion had been restrained” – doesn’t seem to make much sense, but hmm, think of it this way: if he’s just blushing and doing nothing else to betray his feels, then he’s showing the feels are just there, hidden, but still very much alive.
  • the lines about the hair on his head and wanting to live beautifully would make SO MUCH MORE SENSE if i switched them like English grammar demands i do, but…the parallelism with the other chorus…
  • also: yuki, no need to wanna be beautiful, honey. you’re really pretty…
  • I will go to your side…” – fun fact: regarding the verb used here – 参りましょう – 参る can mean “to go [somewhere]”, but it can also mean “to become madly in love”…
  • We’re under a roof” – specifically, 軒下で says they’re under a roof of a Japanese-style house
  • In order to be beguiling” – 艶やか has a lot of charm-/elegance-related meanings, but i went with “beguiling” ‘cuz of, well, guile. i thought it might fit in better with the scent-hiding thing…
  • …the clouds [formed] waterworks” – ok this is DEFINITELY poetic license on my end? he sings specifically about the clouds’ “channel” (the body of water, not the TV ones), which brings to mind the whole rain imagery this one has. what i’m getting at here is that there seem to be fancy water tricks so yeah. if fire tricks going *boom* up in space are fireworks, then what about these water tricks…waterworks!?!?
  • i’m sorry i keep trying to sound clever i am actually rlly bad at puns
  • Nevertheless, if that path is all it’s supposed to be,/I went back to reality” – idk about you but it seems these are different sentences? like he’s thinking “weeeeeeell, if that path’s all it’s hyped up to be, then i guess—“ but he cuts himself off with “…so i went back to reality BUT i was srsly swayed back there” if that makes any sense…
  • i just realized: the name is yukinojou. just a few long vowels away from a homonym of “snow queen” (lol) idk if it has anything to do with his character as a whole (again, i did just say i haven’t watched this thing) but apparently he’s been referred to as “kabuki princess”…? which makes sense, actually, ah
  • ok so i looked into it some more and APPARENTLY his parents were totally against him being an idol!? which was surprising ‘cuz his choruses go “i went back to reality” and all that…but then again he did say he’d been “intoxicated by love” by then…i am going to assume that he’s referring to a love for singing at his own terms (away from the family structure?) or freedom, in general!
  • also going back the thing about the chrysalis taking off its cocoon makes total sense now
